I did this a long time ago with these refugee dudes from DRC... I drew a basic grid of the area they were living and then drew cool things that they would like to do or see in their areas, on the map, like an ice rink and a grand prix track and Nelson Mandelas house... Then you can do various things from there... You can dictate out directions and get all the people to follow the directions and see if they come to the right place... Or you can get them to actually write directions to other places... After/Before that you can also talk about those places so you get a bit of vocab and conversation in on top of it... Worked for me... Also to make the grid you can use Excel to make the grid well and that means you can also drop icons/pictures onto it if you don`t feel like drawing the places...

sorry j, got carried away..
hmmm, directions- i usually pretend the classroom is roads and each desk is a 'block' , then pick on people to give me directions to their classmate, like 'mayu, where is yui sitting?' type thing. or you can put them in rows, each one is a team and the one at the front has a map, you give the back person part of a direction and they have to chinese whisper it down the line, the front person draws the route on the map, give them 4 or 5 and see where they end up.
happy now?

Yeah often but you should be able to put money in the group order if you ask and they usually get it from legendary places that you would never find by yourslef, so you get to find place to order from next time you`re tired and too lazy to leave your house to get food...

hey ry is your msn not working either?
yeah usually the teachers order bento but usually i welcome the opportunity to (go for a walk to the 7'11) and get some fresh air and a change of scenery for 10 minutes during lunch. any excuse, right? kat just called me, her school told her she could go to shibata today to watch the basketball tournament. i asked at my school today but apparently toyoura's bbal tourney was yesterday in suibara so looks like i'm still stuck here till 4...
boo hoo and i have to teach eikaiwa tonight. wednesdays suck.
but it's funny, cuz as soon as my eikaiwa class is over on wednesday night, it's like this huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders and all i feel is relief and optimism, it's almost thursday which means almost the weekend...!
anyone else get these weekly mountain humps? like, the point where your week starts to go on a downward slope toward the weekend?

i'm the same way justine. i teach two eikaiwas on wednesday night. one is for the adults who have no clue about english- always a pin since i can't speak japanese to them to explain when they don't understand things. and then the advanced class, who really don't need to be taking class. they are all practically fluent. so we play lots of logic games and do role play.

when i did directions i drew 2 sets of identical maps. one that was blank but with the outline of the bulidings and the other one had the buildings labeled. the students then had to describe the map to their partner, who had to label the map correctly. it was good for things like "next to, left of , across from, etc.) Then (again in partners) i gave them slips of paper with two famous "landmarks" in town. they then had to write/come up with detailed directions how to get from point a to point b so they could help foreign tourists. things like the hospital and town hall. or shiibata castle to the train station.

bex, thanks so much. i'm going to definitely use that.
kelly, i know...sunday nights are THE WORST. that's why i usually like to have them all to myself...movie, bath, clean apartment, whatev.

my worst part of the week is wed afternoon (ie usually now but they have exams, hence the comment frenzy). i have 7th period, then english club, then 1st and 2nd periods on thurs, so basically four things in a row which take loads of preparation.
but at 1:57 on thurs i'm a happy bunny, got my four classes for the day out the way and only one more before the weekend can begin, woohoo!

Do you know what the hardest thing about learning a language this difficult is... Every time you go up a level you still look like a donkey cause you are trying to say more difficult things or the old stuff in more difficult and precise ways and thus you mess it up as much as you did before... Its hard to always feel one step behind where you wish you could be... I promised myself I would wait about two years to watch all the matrix again and the time has finally arrived, so rented all three and borrowing my schools big speakers to plug into my tv... Quite excited, not gonna lie...
