EIKAIWA POST

hi guys,
i have to start my second semester of eikaiwa class coming up in may. this time i've been asked to pre-plan an outline of the topics/themes i'll be doing beforehand (which was i think one of the reasons i found it so frustrating and disorganized last time - not having a guideline). those of you who teach eikaiwa (and even those who don't), would you mind giving some of your glorious insight into:
- themes i could teach (ie - INTRODUCTIONS/ON THE PHONE etc)
- games/activities for reinforcing these themes
- anything else that would be of help.
sometimes i feel so uncreative when it comes to this kind of thing. i really thought i'd enjoy it more than i do.
cheers.

j-chan, last night i ended up teaching "idioms". i wrote 20 different english idioms on pieces of paper, divided them into pairs and they had like 5-7 miutes each round to discuss what they THINK it might mean. then we shared and i told them what the actual meaning was. that went super well.

also, descriptions can be fun too. give them pictures of famous people, they describe and everyone else has to guess who it is. this can be reversed too with "20 questions"- pictures of people, places, things, etc.

i struggle with eikaiwa too

Ive had adult eikaiwa since i started here. Its def one of my best classes.

I switch between doing 'cultural' things, and then 'grammatical' type langauge things. Yeah, Bex probably stole the idiom thing from me. :-)

Topics i have covered, gramatically speaking-

-Reg and irreg verbs
-Adjective- comparatives, superlatives
-Idioms- this topic can be dragged on and on, its really interesting.- im an idiom geek, they were my fave in german grammar.
-Similies/Metaphors
-Prounouns- personal, relative
-Adverbs
-Nouns

- differences beteeen american/british english - they love this shit coz i get on my high horse and demand they say AUBERGINE and not egg plant! they re getting a LIFT not an elevator...haha

Topics

- Restaurants
- Hotels
-Doctors
- shopping

Cultural things i have done!

- Henry VIII
- Guy Fawkes (you know?)
- Pancake day
- Elizabeth I
- Royals (contemporary)
- Living in england- differences
-Women's rle within society
-Food

I also find DEBATES are great. You might have to cover a topic about HOW TO EXPRESS your opinion. Then create relevent topcs to them, for example-

- Should the Japanese royal family allow for women to ascend to the throne?
etc etc

or cover more topical world issues,
- iraq
- the euro (maybe not so much for you guys)
- Smoking
-Abortion
- the environemnt (kyoto agreement)
- Health
- Suicide

the list is endless

I could go on, in fairness, these are all topics i ahve covered continuously since i started studying German.

The best debates are ones youll get from the newspaper...pick out a local story and discuss it!

Hope this helps
