ah the women of the staff room...

so, as i was saying on my previous entry, i've been trying to not eat as much rice and bread. ok. fair enough. maybe a bit anal but who's business is it anyway? so lately this has caused a bit of a stir amongst the teachers whom i eat lunch with at the lunch table in the teachers room. the women. arg the women. today i was helping to put soup on a tray and one sensei asked me why i didn't eat my rice yesterday and asked if i was trying to diet. i said, well, kinda. choto diet! and she just looks me up and down and says, 'smart girl!' and then another teacher asked me if i was bigger before i came to japan, and i thought about it and just said, 'well maybe a bit' and there were gasps of astonishment and laughter...as if they couldn't actually believe i had been bigger than i am now. aaaaaaaaaah what a great day. such a cruel "...."

try not to let it get to you. although i have had similar experiences here(and some recently). it sucks. we are genetically different to them. we are not meant to be the same size as them. i feel like a heifer in a land of waifs! remember we are not fat/big at home! plus japanese woman are obsessed by their weight anyway. appearances are everything in this country. totally understand how you're feeling though.

actually, i was saying to the girls earlier about how nice it's been hanging out with all of the ALTs doing the musical. all 30+ of them are all shapes and sizes, and for once in a year and a half i felt normal next to them!
by the way...are you coming to singapore????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? hope so!

You know that Japanese people usually use the the word "smart" to mean thin. Honestly, I found out when I was doing my appearences lesson. Thin people are smart, and smartly dressed are formal.

As I mentione last night and Martin said, I don't know why but Japanese people say "smart" as a thin or slim. Crazily, they believe that word "smart" is an English word which has the same meanings as English "smart" does. She probably meant you did not have to be on diet. However, the last part was not really nice anyway...
