Q. Why do so many Japanese women walk pigeon-toed? Does this have anything to do with Japan's low birth-rate? ;-) -Question submitted by Ole Jenson
A. Walking pigeon-toed is considered feminine in Japan, and is an affectation rather than a physical characteristic. Some people have suggested that it is because their legs are deformed from sitting in seiza (on your shins with your legs folded under you) but this is simply untrue. The real answer is that it is a holdover from the days when people still wore kimono. If you walk normally while wearing one, the kimono tends to comes open so for modesty people began walking pigeon-toed. Even though people no longer wear kimono, a shuffling walk with one's feet turned inward is still considered modest, feminine, and even cute.

if any japanese women are reading who walk pigeon-toed, DO YOU REALIZE HOW RIDICULOUSLY STUPID YOU LOOK?

doing it by mistake is one thing.
doing it on purpose means you're going straight to hell.
hahaha...it was funny and I, myself as a Japanese woman, agree walking pigeon toed is RIDICULOUSLY STUPID and funny. I often think how can they possibly not fall!? I should ask one my friends who walk like that when i see her next time!

on that same note...why do they where heels everyday YET still dont know how to WALK in the damn things. The combination of pigeon-toed-ness plus not strapping their heels on so they clunk clunk as the walk makes for an all bad situation! :) nice blog J
